Game Overview
Remember that Maximum Carnage comic arc from the '90s? This Sega Genesis game throws you right into that chaos—side-scrolling brawler style. You pick Spider-Man or Venom (obviously I always go Venom) and just wreck your way through New York streets packed with Carnage's goons. The first level alone has you dodging dumpsters thrown by freaky symbiote mutants while the bass-heavy soundtrack makes everything feel way more intense than it should.
What I love is how unapologetically comic book it looks—all jagged edges and blood-red cutscenes straight from the panels. And yeah, it’s hard as nails sometimes (those damn knife guys), but pulling off a 20-hit combo as Venom never gets old. Random heroes like Iron Fist pop in to help, which feels awesome until you realize they’ll steal your last health pickup. Classic Genesis jank, but in the best way possible.
Fun fact: The actual cartridge was bright red. That should tell you everything about how over-the-top this game is.
