Sports Illustrated: Golf Class came out for the original Game Boy, published by Malibu Games. It was one of several golf titles on the system, offering a straightforward, portable take on the sport without much fanfare. The game arrived during a time when handheld golf sims were simple, focused more on function than flair, and this one fit right into that no-nonsense niche.
You control a golfer viewed from above, working your way through a series of courses hole by hole. The main objective is to finish each round under par, navigating fairways, avoiding hazards, and reading the green for putts. Key mechanics include selecting clubs based on distance, adjusting your shot for wind direction and strength shown by an on-screen meter, and judging the slope of the green visually. The pacing is deliberate, almost methodical; you take one shot at a time, and misjudging the wind or a putt can easily ruin your score. It feels satisfying when you sink a long putt or nail a drive exactly where you aimed, but one mistake keeps you coming back to try again.
