Streets of Rage 3 came out for the Sega Genesis in 1994, developed and published by Sega. It was one of the later beat 'em ups on the system, arriving at a time when the genre was already well established, but it tried to push things forward with some new ideas and a noticeably different tone.
You control one of several characters, like Axel, Blaze, or Skate, each with unique moves and fighting styles. Your goal is to fight through screen after screen of enemies to stop the villain Mr. X and his latest scheme. The game introduces new mechanics like a branching path system that changes the levels you play, and a special move meter that lets you perform powerful attacks without losing health. The pacing is fast and the difficulty is high, especially in the later stages. It feels like a frantic, sometimes punishing rush through a city that's completely lost to crime.
