Play Sword of Vermilion Online
Sword of Vermilion keeps switching perspectives on you—top-down towns, first-person overworld, side-scrolling fights—but once you adjust, swinging your sword at monsters just feels right. Also, surprise, you're a prince now—go collect some magic rings.
If you've played Phantasy Star II, you'll notice Sword of Vermilion feels like its scrappier, slightly weird cousin—same era, same Sega Genesis vibes, but with this odd mix of perspectives. You’re some guy who suddenly finds out he’s actually a prince (classic RPG move), and now you’re stuck gathering magic rings to take down the evil King Tsarkon.
What’s wild is how the game keeps switching views on you. Towns are top-down, like an old-school Zelda, but then you step outside and suddenly it’s first-person, like you’re wandering through a foggy medieval screensaver. Combat? Side-scrolling beat-em-up style, which feels bizarre at first but weirdly works. The controls take some getting used to, but once you get the rhythm, smacking monsters with your sword has a satisfying crunch to it.
It’s janky in that very 1989 way, but there’s charm in the clunkiness. Just don’t expect a polished modern RPG—this one’s all about nostalgia and weird little surprises.
