Game Overview

Tatsujin, known as Truxton in the West, came out for the Sega Genesis in 1989, developed by Toaplan. It was part of that early wave of shooters that really tried to push the hardware, filling the screen with more enemies and bullets than many of its contemporaries. You could tell it was built by people who understood the arcade experience, even if the home port had to make some concessions.

You pilot a sleek fighter ship, moving it to blast alien invaders and massive bosses across a series of horizontally scrolling stages. Your main objective is survival, plain and simple, which means learning enemy patterns and navigating dense bullet patterns. The game gives you three weapon types (red, green, blue) that you collect and power up by grabbing specific colored orbs dropped by certain enemies, and a screen-clearing bomb that feels absolutely essential when you're cornered. The pacing is relentless, and the difficulty is famously steep, demanding precise movement and quick decisions. It feels like a constant, exhilarating fight for your life where every small victory is earned.
