I picked up The Barbie Diaries: High School Mystery back in 2006 for the Game Boy Advance. It was developed by Vicarious Visions, who did a lot of solid handheld work around that time. The game fits right in with the era's focus on character driven adventures, especially those aimed at younger audiences who wanted something a bit more involved than a simple minigame collection.
You play as Barbie, navigating her high school to solve a mystery. The main goal is to find out who is spreading rumors and sabotaging the school dance. You explore the campus screen by screen, talking to other students and gathering clues. Two key mechanics involve using Barbie's diary to review case notes and analyze evidence, like comparing fingerprints or decoding messages. The pacing is relaxed, with simple puzzles that keep you moving forward without much frustration. It feels like a light, charming little investigation that doesn't overstay its welcome.
