Game Overview
Thunder Force II is one of those classic Genesis shooters that keeps switching things up on you. One minute you're flying top-down, weaving through asteroid fields like some forgotten arcade game, the next you're side-scrolling through bullet hell with that crunchy Genesis soundtrack blasting. Weirdly, it works.
You start with just a pea shooter and some weak missiles, but wrecking enemies drops these little power-up pods—grabbing enough of them turns your ship into an absolute monster. The side-scrolling levels feel way harder than the overhead ones, at least until you figure out the patterns. That second stage boss still gives me nightmares.
It's janky by today's standards, but there's something satisfying about how raw it feels. Like they hadn't quite figured out the Genesis hardware yet, but threw everything at the wall anyway. The music slaps, though.
