Thunder Force III is one of those Genesis shooters that just nails the balance between chaos and control. You start with this dinky little ship, but within minutes you're juggling different weapon types—the homing lasers feel overpowered at first, until you hit a boss that laughs at them. The levels have this awesome sense of scale, with massive alien landscapes scrolling by while you dodge bullet sprays that somehow never feel unfair.
