TOCA World Touring Cars came out on the Game Boy Advance in 2003, developed by Codemasters. It was part of that wave of handheld games trying to deliver a console-like racing experience, a challenge on the small screen with limited hardware. You weren't getting a full simulation, but it was a solid attempt to bring touring car action into your pocket.
You control a driver in a field of touring cars, aiming to win races across a championship season. The game uses a behind-the-car perspective, and you spend most of your time managing your speed through corners, drafting opponents on straights, and trying to avoid contact that can spin you out. Two key mechanics are the pre-race car setup, where you adjust gear ratios and suspension to suit each track, and a damage model that punishes reckless driving by affecting your car's handling. The pacing is quick, and the AI provides a consistent challenge, making clean laps essential. It feels like a focused, technical driving test where every mistake has immediate consequences.
