Tomato Adventure came out on the Game Boy Advance in 2002, developed by AlphaDream. It arrived during a time when the handheld was full of inventive, quirky RPGs that didn't always get a wide release. This one definitely fits that mold, a colorful and oddball title that feels distinctly its own.
You control a young boy named DeMille, exploring a world obsessed with ketchup, screen by screen. Your main goal involves tracking down a group of thieves, but the journey is packed with strange characters and even stranger locations. Combat uses a unique system where you activate attacks through timing-based mini-games; a successful input means a powerful hit, while a mistake can leave you vulnerable. You also collect and upgrade a variety of silly gadgets, which are essential for solving puzzles and progressing through the game's many dungeons. The pacing is brisk, and the difficulty comes more from mastering the action commands than from brutal enemy stats. It feels like playing inside a wonderfully bizarre cartoon.
