Torpedo Range came out for the Game Boy in 1990, developed by Taito. It was part of that early wave of portable games that tried to translate complex arcade ideas into something you could play on the go, trading flashy graphics for straightforward, repeatable action.
You pilot a small submarine viewed from the side, carefully navigating narrow underwater channels. Enemy ships patrol the surface, dropping depth charges you must avoid, while mines and other hazards fill the passages. Your goal is to survive each stage and sink enemy submarines, which requires switching to a first-person targeting view to aim and fire your torpedoes. The constant shift between dodging in the side-scrolling view and precise aiming in first-person gives the game a distinct rhythm; it feels tense and methodical, demanding patience as much as quick reflexes.
