Trip World came out on the Game Boy in 1992, developed by Sunsoft. It was part of that wave of early platformers that tried to do something a little different, with a focus on charm and transformation instead of just running and jumping. It never got the same attention as some of the bigger names, but it had a quiet, colorful style that stood out on the monochrome screen.
You control Yakopu, a small round creature who explores the world screen by screen. Your main goal is to restore peace by finding the three sacred flames. Yakopu can jump and spit seeds to defeat enemies, but his key ability is transforming. By holding jump, he turns into a floating balloon to cross gaps or avoid hazards; in water, he becomes a fish to swim freely. The pacing is relaxed, with more emphasis on exploration and puzzle solving than intense combat, though some sections require careful timing. It feels gentle and inventive, like wandering through a strange, hand drawn picture book.
