Game Overview

Tripple-X came out on the Amiga in 1985, a puzzle game from developer/publisher Discovery Software. It was one of those early titles that showed off what the system could do, visually, while fitting right into the era's growing interest in cerebral, tile-matching challenges.

You control a cursor to swap adjacent symbols on a grid, aiming to create rows or columns of three or more identical icons to clear them from the screen. The main objective is to prevent the playfield from completely filling up, which requires planning several moves ahead to set up chain reactions. Two signature mechanics are the special power-up tiles, like bombs that clear a cluster of symbols, and the two-player competitive mode where you directly battle against an opponent on a split screen. The pacing is methodical but can become frantic as the board gets more crowded, demanding quick decisions. It feels like a constant, satisfying battle against a rising tide of colorful chaos.
