Game Overview

Tsumego was a puzzle game for the original Game Boy, released in 1990 by developer/publisher I'Max. It arrived during a time when handheld gaming was still finding its footing, offering a focused, cerebral alternative to the action and adventure titles that dominated the platform. The game presented a digital adaptation of a classic element of Go strategy, providing a portable way to practice and refine one's tactical thinking without needing a physical board or opponent.

You don't control a character, but rather you analyze static Go board positions, placing virtual stones to solve each presented problem. The main objective is to find the correct sequence of moves to achieve a specific goal, such as capturing a group of stones or securing life for your own. The game progresses screen by screen through increasingly difficult puzzles, demanding careful reading and foresight; a single misplaced stone can force you to restart the entire sequence. The pacing is methodical and the difficulty steep, rewarding patience and deep concentration over quick reflexes. It feels like quietly untangling a stubborn knot in your mind, one deliberate move at a time.
