Game Overview

Ultraman Club came out on the Game Boy in 1991, published by Bandai. It was one of those many licensed games from the era, a side-scrolling beat 'em up that tried to capture the feel of the show on the small screen. You don't hear much about it now, but it was a solid attempt to bring giant heroes and rubber-suited kaiju into a portable format.

You control Ultraman, moving from left to right through each stage, punching and kicking your way through waves of familiar monsters. The main goal is simply to clear each area, culminating in a boss fight. Two mechanics stand out: building up a special meter by fighting well lets you unleash Ultraman's signature Specium Ray, and some stages break up the action with simple flying shooter sections. The pacing is straightforward, the difficulty manageable but not without a few cheap hits from off-screen enemies. It feels like a condensed, chunky version of the television action, satisfying in short bursts.
