Valis III is one of those Genesis action-platformers that feels like it got lost in the shuffle back in the day, which is a shame because it's way more interesting than most people realize. You switch between three heroines—Yuko, Valna, and Cham—each with their own weapons and movement quirks. Yuko's sword has decent range, Valna's magic is slow but wrecks bosses, and Cham... well, her claws are fun but you'll probably swap her out for the others most of the time.
The levels have this weird, dreamy quality to them—floating islands, gothic castles, the usual '90s anime fantasy stuff—but the music sticks with you. That one stage with the purple sky and synth choirs? Absolute vibe. Just don't expect it to hold your hand; some of those platforming sections are brutal if you're not used to the character switching.
Fun fact: The TurboGrafx-CD version looks prettier, but the Genesis cart has this raw, chunky charm that fits the gameplay better. Either way, it's a solid hidden gem if you're into retro action with a female-led twist.
