Vasara is one of those arcade shooters that grabs you by the collar and doesn’t let go. You’ve got these samurai warriors piloting steampunk-ish flying machines, slashing through enemy ships with swords when they’re not blasting them to bits. The first time I played, I got wrecked in about 30 seconds—those bullet patterns come at you fast.
What makes it stand out is the melee attack. Instead of just dodging bullets, you can actually slice through them like some kind of airborne swordmaster. There’s something deeply satisfying about cutting a path through a wall of projectiles instead of weaving around them. The characters all feel different too—one’s got this wide spread shot, another fires concentrated lasers, and their screen-clearing specials are downright cinematic.
If you’ve got a soft spot for arcade shooters that don’t mess around, Vasara’s worth firing up in MAME. Just don’t blame me when you’re muttering “one more try” at 2 AM.
