Game Overview

Virtua Tennis for the Game Boy Advance came out in 2002, published by Sega. It was one of the better sports titles on the handheld, arriving at a time when getting a solid arcade-style experience on the go still felt like a novelty. The game translated the simple, fast-paced action of its bigger console cousins into a portable format without losing much of the immediacy.

You control a tennis player from an elevated perspective, moving them around the court to hit the ball. The main goal is to win matches in the tournament mode, which lets you unlock new courts and players. Signature mechanics include timing your shots for different effects, like a powerful topspin or a tricky slice, and playing the various mini-games, such as hitting targets that appear on the opposite side of the net. The pacing is quick, matches don't drag, and the difficulty feels fair as you progress. It just feels good to connect with a well-timed shot and watch the ball zip past your opponent.
