Vortex came out on the Amiga in 1988 from Visionary Design Technologies Inc. It was a time when developers were really pushing what the hardware could do with fast action and colorful graphics, and this game fit right into that experimental spirit. You controlled a small ship with the mouse, either alone or with a friend, tasked with sealing a dimensional rift.
You pilot a ship inside a series of single-screen arenas, using a unique tractor beam to grab enemies and fling them into the force walls that border the play area. The main objective is to clear each screen of all foes to progress, but many enemies are linked together in chains; you have to strategically split these chains apart by destroying the connecting links before you can eliminate them individually. The pacing is relentless, with enemies swarming quickly, making precise mouse movements crucial. It feels like a tense, tactical puzzle where every move needs to be calculated under pressure.
