Winner's Horse was a 1990 Game Boy release from developer Athena, a straightforward racing game that fit right in with the platform's early library of portable, pick-up-and-play titles. It didn't try to be anything more than a quick distraction, a pocket-sized take on horse racing that you could finish in a single sitting.
You control a jockey on a horse, viewed from a side perspective, and the goal is simply to win each race by mashing the A button to accelerate. The core mechanics are built around managing your horse's stamina, which depletes as you sprint, and timing your bursts of speed to overtake opponents on the straightaways. The tracks get progressively more difficult, introducing sharp turns that require you to briefly let off the gas or risk crashing into the fence, which brings you to a complete stop. It's a simple game of rhythm and reaction, and the feeling of nailing a perfect run to win by a nose is genuinely satisfying.
