Game Overview

Wolf Child came out in 1993 for the Sega Genesis, developed by Core Design. It was part of that wave of action platformers that tried to mix up the formula with transformation mechanics and a sci-fi edge, something a bit different from the usual fantasy or military themes common on the system at the time.

You control Joe Gibson, a cyborg who can transform into a powerful werewolf. The goal is to rescue your kidnapped scientist father by fighting through five levels of enemy soldiers and robotic creatures. The key mechanics involve switching between human and wolf forms on the fly; Joe uses a gun for ranged attacks, while the wolf relies on close-range slashes and a screen-clearing howl. The levels are linear but packed with enemies, requiring quick form changes to handle different threats. The pacing is fast, and the difficulty can spike sharply, especially during boss encounters. It feels chaotic and a little rough, but there's a raw energy to plowing through enemies as the wolf that makes it stick in your memory.
