Xiao Monv – Magic Girl is one of those Genesis games you stumble upon and immediately wonder how you missed it back in the day. You play as this tiny, determined sorceress bouncing through pastel-colored forests and floating castles, lobbing spells at everything from grumpy mushrooms to flying teapots (seriously). The controls are snappy—tap a button, and she whips out a spell with this satisfying little flick of her wand.
It’s got that classic "secret in every corner" vibe—I spent way too long poking at suspicious-looking trees just to see if coins or a hidden transformation would pop out. And speaking of transformations, some of them are downright silly (turning into a frog to squeeze through tiny gaps never gets old). The music’s cheery in that unmistakable 16-bit way, all twinkly melodies that stick in your head.
Not gonna lie, some later levels ramp up the difficulty out of nowhere, but it’s the good kind of frustrating—the "one more try" kind. If you’ve got a soft spot for forgotten 90s platformers with personality, this one’s a total charmer.
