You're an angel leading a squad of girls through a dying world, juggling broken weapons mid-battle while trying not to mess up your flirty dialogue choices. The GBA shouldn't handle pixel art and music this good.
Yakusoku no Chi Riviera, known as Riviera: The Promised Land in English, came out on the Game Boy Advance in 2004, developed by Sting. It was part of that wave of late GBA RPGs that really pushed what the hardware could do visually and sonically, with detailed sprites and a memorable soundtrack that stood out even as the DS was arriving.
You control Ein, a young divine soldier, accompanied by a group of allies known as the Grim Angels, exploring a cursed land called Riviera. The main goal is to uncover the truth behind an impending catastrophe while managing relationships with your party members. Exploration happens screen by screen, with limited movement that emphasizes careful searching for items and triggers. Combat uses a turn based system where weapons have durability and break after a set number of uses, forcing you to manage your arsenal closely. Dialogue choices affect character affinity and can alter story outcomes. The pacing is deliberate, with a moderate difficulty that comes more from resource management than reflexes. It feels like a thoughtful, almost melancholic journey where every interaction and inventory choice carries weight.
