Play Ys - Wanderers from Ys (Japan) Online
Swing your sword in real-time instead of bump combat—this Ys entry trades top-down for side-scrolling action, with clunky jumps but killer Genesis tunes. Boss fights will humble you until you learn their moves.

Game Overview
Ys III: Wanderers from Ys is a weird little departure for the series—instead of the usual top-down hack-and-slash, it’s a side-scrolling action RPG where you actually control Adol’s sword swings and jumps. Feels way more hands-on than the first two games, though the platforming can be a bit stiff at times. Still, the music slaps (as always with Ys), and there’s something charming about how rough around the edges it is.
You’ll spend most of your time slashing through monsters in villages and caves, jumping over pits, and getting wrecked by bosses until you figure out their patterns. Not the deepest combat, but it’s fun in a straightforward, old-school way. The Sega Genesis version’s got that crunchy 16-bit look, though I’ve heard the PC-Engine one’s a bit smoother.
If you’re into retro action RPGs with a side of jank, this one’s worth a look—just don’t expect Ys I or II.
