Game Overview

Yu-Gi-Oh! The Eternal Duelist Soul is basically the closest you could get to the actual card game on the Game Boy Advance. You start off with a pretty basic deck—I went with the dragon one because, well, dragons—and then you’re thrown into this world where everyone wants to duel you. Like, everyone. The shopkeeper, the kid in the park, even some shady guy lurking in an alley.

Battles play out just like the real card game, with monsters, traps, and spells. At first, I kept losing because I didn’t realize how important it was to balance attack and defense cards. But once you get the hang of it, there’s something really satisfying about pulling off a perfect combo and wiping out your opponent’s life points in one turn.

Time actually passes in-game, so if you duel someone, it’s suddenly the next day. It’s a neat touch—you can’t just spam battles forever, because eventually, tournaments pop up, and those are where you really test your skills. Plus, winning gets you new booster packs, which is basically the digital version of tearing open a fresh pack of cards and hoping for something good.

It’s not perfect—some of the AI opponents feel a little cheap—but if you ever wanted to carry a Yu-Gi-Oh! duel in your pocket, this was the way to do it back in the day.
