You control one of the mamodo partners, like Zatch or his rivals, and battle another pair in one-on-one fights. The main goal is to deplete your opponent's health by casting spells, which you do by rapidly tapping buttons to charge up your attack. Each character has a unique set of spells that play out in short, dramatic cutscenes. Matches are fast and a bit frantic, relying on quick reflexes and memorizing which spells work best. It feels like a condensed, button-mashing version of the anime's magical duels.
