Zero Wing came out for the Sega Genesis in 1989, developed by Toaplan. It was one of those early side-scrolling shooters that felt right at home on the system, sitting alongside other space-themed action games of the time. You control a small, nimble ship that you pilot through horizontally scrolling stages filled with enemy craft and environmental hazards. Your main goal is to survive each level, defeat the boss waiting at the end, and push further into enemy territory. Two mechanics stand out: the ability to collect and upgrade different weapon types, like spread and laser, and a tractor beam that lets you grab smaller enemies and fling them into others. The pacing is fast, and the difficulty ramps up quickly, demanding sharp reflexes and smart weapon choices. It feels tense and satisfying when your upgrades click and you tear through a tough section.
