Zoids Densetsu came out for the Game Boy in 1990, developed and published by Tomy. It was part of that early wave of portable games where you got a lot of action squeezed into a small cartridge, no frills, just straightforward mech combat. It didn't try to reinvent the wheel, but it gave you a solid taste of the Zoids universe right in your hands.
You control a pilot who commands different Zoids, switching between them to tackle specific enemies and environments. The main goal is to fight through enemy forces across various stages, each culminating in a challenging boss encounter. Key mechanics include swapping your active Zoid on the fly to exploit enemy weaknesses, managing limited ammunition for ranged attacks, and navigating enemy patterns that demand quick reflexes. The pacing is brisk, and the difficulty can be punishing if you don't adapt your strategy. It feels like a tense, tactical duel where every move counts.
