Zoids Saga II came out for the Game Boy Advance in 2004, developed by Tomy and published by Atlus. It was part of that wave of mecha games on the GBA that tried to bring a deeper, tactical experience to a handheld, sitting alongside titles that offered more than just action. You got a solid RPG wrapped around the Zoids license, which already had a following from the model kits and anime.
You control a pilot who assembles and leads a squad of animal themed mechs called Zoids, engaging in turn based battles on grid based maps. Your main goal involves progressing through a story driven campaign, recruiting new pilots, and hunting for parts to upgrade your team. Key mechanics include customizing each Zoid's weapons and armor in the garage between fights, and using terrain on the battlefield for tactical advantages. The pacing is deliberate, with a difficulty that punishes careless positioning but rewards smart planning. It feels satisfying to finally deploy a well tuned Zoid that operates exactly how you designed it to.
