Zork Zero is that rare beast—a text adventure that doesn’t feel like homework. You start with this weird old parchment and a kingdom cursed by some guy named Megaboz (who, let’s be honest, sounds like a rejected Bond villain). The writing’s sharp—equal parts ridiculous and clever—and the puzzles actually make sense once you stop overthinking them. Mostly.

What’s cool is how it mixes classic Zork vibes with little graphical touches—like the way scenes have colored borders that change based on where you are. There’s even an in-game encyclopedia because, surprise, Flathead’s empire had a lot of nonsense to keep track of. Oh, and between deciphering ancient curses, you’ll stumble into these mini-games that feel like someone smuggled a puzzle book into your adventure. Just don’t expect the map to save you from getting lost in a hedge maze at 2 AM.

It’s Zork, but with slightly more mercy. And slightly more Megaboz.
