I first played 1942 on the NES back in the mid 80s, a port of Capcom's arcade shooter. It was one of those straightforward, no frills games that filled out the early library of the system, a vertical scroller that asked little more than quick reflexes and a steady hand.

You control a fighter plane, scrolling upward automatically while blasting waves of enemy aircraft. The main goal is simply to survive as long as possible, navigating through 32 stages of increasing chaos. Your plane can perform a loop-the-loop maneuver to briefly become invincible and shake off pursuers, and you collect power-ups to upgrade your main shot and gain wingman allies. The pace is relentless, the difficulty steep, with bullets and enemy planes filling the screen. It feels tense and demanding, a pure test of concentration and dodging skill.
