Game Overview
I remember picking up 4D Sports Boxing, Disk 2, for the Amiga back in 1991. It was developed by Distinctive Software, the same team behind a lot of the solid sports titles of that era. On the Amiga, which had a reputation for strong arcade and strategy games, a dedicated boxing sim felt like a niche but welcome addition. It wasn't trying to be the flashiest game on the system, but it had a certain depth that appealed to players who wanted more than just a quick brawl.
You control a boxer from a behind-the-back perspective, throwing jabs, hooks, and uppercuts with the joystick and buttons. The main goal is to climb the ranks in a career mode, winning matches to improve your stats and unlock new opponents and venues. Two of its signature mechanics are the split-screen two-player versus mode, which was a blast with a friend, and a dynamic damage system where you could see visible cuts and swelling on your fighter's face. The pacing is deliberate, demanding strategy and timing over button mashing; it can be quite difficult as you face tougher opponents. It feels tense and rewarding, like a real chess match with fists.
