Abandoned Places is one of those classic Amiga RPGs that feels like it throws you straight into a world that’s already lived-in. You control four heroes—your usual fighter, mage, rogue types—trying to stop an evil archmage from wrecking Kalynthia. At first glance, the overworld’s simple top-down view doesn’t seem like much, but there’s a surprising amount to poke around in. Towns are these little hubs where you click icons to hit up the church for healing or bug the local sage for cryptic advice.
Then the dungeons hit, and suddenly it’s full-on Dungeon Master mode—first-person, grid-based, and tense. Combat’s all about timing: click a sword or spell, whack a monster, then wait for the cooldown. It’s clunky by today’s standards, but there’s something satisfying about barely surviving a skeleton ambush because your fighter’s axe finally recharged. Just don’t expect flashy animations.
It’s got that old-school charm where you either love the jank or bounce off hard. I still remember getting lost in the third dungeon for hours.
