Abandoned Places: A Time for Heroes came out in 1992 as part of the MS-DOS Classic Games series, developed by ArtGame. It was a time when turn-based strategy games were finding their footing on PC, and this one fit right in with its gritty, low-fantasy aesthetic and unforgiving mechanics.
You control a small squad of mercenaries, each with distinct skills, navigating maze-like ruins one screen at a time. Your goal is to survive, scavenge for weapons and supplies, and complete missions that often involve clearing areas of hostile creatures or rival gangs. Combat is turn-based and tactical, requiring careful positioning and resource management; every bullet counts, and healing items are scarce. The pacing is deliberate, almost tense, as you inch forward into unknown rooms, never sure what’s waiting. Each game uses different controls, most DOS games use the keyboard arrows. Some will use the mouse , "Alt" ,"Enter" and "Space bar".
