Ace Combat Advance came out in 2005 for the Game Boy Advance, developed by Human Soft. It was one of the few attempts to bring a flight combat sim to the handheld, arriving late in the system's life when players were used to more complex or polished titles. It tried to capture the feel of its console siblings but on a much smaller screen.
You pilot a fighter jet through a series of missions, engaging enemy aircraft and ground targets with machine guns and a limited supply of missiles. The main objective is to complete each sortie by destroying all primary targets while avoiding too much damage. Signature mechanics include a radar that shows enemy positions relative to your plane and a lock-on system for firing missiles, though managing your limited ammo and evading constant fire requires careful maneuvering. The pacing is relentless, and the difficulty spikes sharply in later missions where enemy numbers overwhelm the small field of view. It feels like a constant scramble for survival, where every successful mission comes down to tight turns and well-placed shots.
