The Adventures of Captain Comic came out in 1988 for the NES, developed by Michael Denio and published by Color Dreams. It was one of those early, unlicensed titles that felt a bit separate from the polished Nintendo lineup, a game made on the fringes with its own rough style. You could tell it was trying to capture some of that exploratory platformer energy, but it did things its own way.

You control Captain Comic, moving screen by screen through a large world, collecting keys and power-ups to progress. The main goal is to gather three pieces of a treasure map, which involves navigating caves, forests, and other themed areas. You shoot enemies with a limited projectile weapon, and the pacing is slow, deliberate; the challenge comes from awkward jumps, limited lives, and some cryptic progression. It feels like a patient, slightly clumsy trek through a homemade world.
