I first played Adventures of Dino Riki on the NES back in 1987, a game Hudson Soft put out during that era when side-scrolling shooters were everywhere. It wasn't the flashiest title on the system, but it had a certain charm with its prehistoric setting and straightforward, if punishing, approach to action.
You control a small caveman named Riki who runs automatically from left to right, shooting rocks at dinosaurs and pterodactyls while dodging their attacks. The main goal is simply to survive each stage, collecting power-ups like fireballs, boomerangs, and temporary wings that let you fly over obstacles. The screen scrolls continuously, forcing quick decisions as enemies swarm from all directions. It's a tough game, with limited continues and aggressive enemy patterns that demand sharp reflexes. Playing it feels like a constant scramble to stay alive just a little longer.
