Aidyn Chronicles: The First Mage came out in 2001 for the Nintendo 64, developed by H2O Entertainment. It was one of the later RPGs on the system, arriving when many players were already looking toward newer consoles, but it offered a substantial, open world adventure for those still invested in the N64. The game stood out for its attempt to deliver a more traditional, party based role playing experience on a platform not exactly known for them.
You play as Alaron, a knight who has been poisoned and must find a cure before time runs out. You explore the world screen by screen, engaging in real time combat that pauses when you attack or use items. Positioning matters; you maneuver your party members to flank enemies or avoid attacks, then choose actions like sword strikes or spells. The game is slow paced and often difficult, with a high encounter rate and some unforgiving mechanics. Playing it feels like wrestling with an ambitious but unpolished system, where patience is rewarded with a surprisingly deep and somber journey.
