Game Overview
Donkey Kong 64 feels like Banjo-Kazooie’s tropical cousin—same goofy Rareware charm, but with way more monkeys. You start as DK, but pretty soon you’re rescuing the rest of the crew, each with their own weird little quirks. Tiny Kong’s ponytail works like a helicopter, and Lanky? That guy stretches his arms like taffy. Weird, but it works.
The levels are these massive playgrounds where you’re constantly backtracking once you unlock new abilities. At first you’ll just grab golden bananas, but later you’ll be shooting peanuts as Diddy or swimming through underwater caves as Chunky. Cranky Kong (still cranky) doles out new moves in exchange for coins, and suddenly that ledge you couldn’t reach before is fair game. Just watch out for the minecart sections—they haven’t gotten any less brutal since the SNES days.
It’s bananas. Literally. Five colors of them, one for each character, plus golden ones, plus random collectibles stuffed in every corner. You’ll either love the scavenger hunt or hate how much there is to keep track of. Either way, the soundtrack slaps, and the sheer variety of minigames (jetpack races, anyone?) keeps it from feeling stale. Just don’t blame me when you start humming the DK Rap in the shower.
