Game Overview

I remember playing the 1983 MS-DOS version of Donkey Kong, which was part of the MS-DOS Classic Games collection. It was a straightforward port of the arcade game, released during a time when home computer adaptations were often hit or miss. The game came out on a platform where many players were just starting to explore what PCs could do with action titles, and it stood out as one of the more recognizable arcade conversions available then.

You control Jumpman, later known as Mario, and your goal is to rescue Pauline from Donkey Kong by climbing a series of platforms while avoiding obstacles. The gameplay involves running and jumping across steel girders, climbing ladders to ascend or evade threats, and timing your movements to dodge barrels thrown by the ape. You can also use hammers to smash barrels temporarily, though they are scarce and only appear in specific spots. The pacing is relentless, with each screen introducing new hazards like fireballs or bouncing springs that demand quick reflexes. It feels tense and immediate, especially when you misjudge a jump and lose a life just inches from the top.

Each game uses different controls, most DOS games use the keyboard arrows. Some will use the mouse , "Alt" ,"Enter" and "Space bar".
