Game Overview

Donkey Kong Country on SNES is one of those games that just sticks with you. You start off with Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong teaming up to get back their stolen bananas from King K. Rool and his army of Kremlings—these weird crocodile dudes who range from easy-to-squish Kritters to nearly unkillable Krushas. And that’s not even counting the beavers, snakes, and vultures waiting to ruin your day.

The two apes play totally differently—Donkey’s a powerhouse who can chuck barrels halfway across the screen, while Diddy’s all about speed and cartwheels. You’ll swap between them on the fly, which keeps things interesting when you’re bouncing off enemies or sneaking past hazards. The levels are packed with hidden bonus rooms full of bananas and extra lives, and every world ends with a ridiculous boss fight against oversized versions of regular enemies (Queen B. is especially annoying).

The later Game Boy versions added some weird extras, like fishing minigames and a dance studio (yes, really). But the SNES original is still the best—tight controls, gorgeous pre-rendered graphics, and that iconic soundtrack. Just try not to get too mad when you miss a jump and land on an enemy you swore you stomped.
