Konami released Akumajou Dracula: Circle of the Moon for the Game Boy Advance in 2001, a time when the handheld was still new and developers were figuring out what it could do. This was one of the early titles that tried to bring a full console-style Castlevania experience to a portable, with a big, interconnected castle to explore and that familiar gothic atmosphere, though the hardware's screen made some areas frustratingly dark.
You control Nathan Graves, a young vampire hunter armed with a whip, and your goal is to stop Dracula's resurrection by navigating the castle room by room. The game uses a dual card system where you collect magical cards from enemies and combine them to alter your whip's properties, adding elemental or special effects to your attacks. Exploration is methodical and often backtrack-heavy, with new abilities opening up previously unreachable sections, and the difficulty is punishing, especially against bosses that demand pattern recognition and precise timing. It feels like a slow, deliberate crawl through a dangerous place where every corner could hide a new threat or a vital power-up.
