Game Overview

All-Star Tennis 99 came out for the Nintendo 64 in 1999, developed and published by Ubisoft. It was one of several sports titles on the system that tried to offer a more arcade-like alternative to the simulation-heavy games of the era. You could pick from a roster of real pros and fictional characters, each with their own strengths and weaknesses on the court.

You control a tennis player from a behind-the-back perspective, moving them around the court to hit forehands, backhands, lobs, and smashes. The main goal is to win matches by outscoring your opponent in sets. Key mechanics include timing your shots for power and accuracy, as well as using a special shot meter that builds up during rallies. The pacing is fairly quick, and the difficulty can spike against more aggressive AI opponents. It feels responsive and straightforward, even when the matches get tense.
