Altered Space came out for the Game Boy in 1991, developed by HAL Laboratory. It was one of those odd, experimental titles that felt a bit out of place next to the more straightforward platformers and puzzle games of the era. You don't hear much about it now, but it had a quietly strange presence on the system.
You control a small character navigating a series of interconnected, glitched-out rooms. The main goal is to find your way through this unstable environment, solving spatial puzzles as you go. Signature mechanics include doors that unpredictably teleport you to different screens, walls that can be passed through under certain conditions, and rooms that suddenly invert, flipping the entire layout and your perspective. The pacing is deliberate, almost methodical, as you test each door and surface, and the difficulty comes from learning the game's inconsistent logic. It feels like carefully picking your way through a digital house of cards that might collapse at any moment.
