American Bass Challenge came out for the Game Boy Advance in 2001, published by Starfish. It was one of those quiet releases that filled out the library, a fishing sim for a handheld that was just starting to show its potential. You didn't hear much about it, but if you liked the idea of carrying a whole tackle box in your pocket, it had its appeal.
You control an angler from a first person perspective, casting your line into various lakes with the goal of catching the biggest bass. The game uses a sonar screen to show fish movement, and you must watch it closely for a bite. When a fish takes the lure, you enter a struggle mode, carefully reeling in while managing line tension to avoid a break. Weather conditions affect fish behavior, adding a layer of planning to each outing. It feels surprisingly focused, a patient test of observation and timing.
