Play Astyanax (Europe) Online

Some kid gets yanked into a fantasy world, handed an axe, and told to save a princess—next thing you know, you're chopping through waves of monsters while your weapon slowly levels up. Those comic book cutscenes are pure 80s cheese, and the bosses will wreck you if you're not careful.

Game Overview

Astyanax is one of those NES games that starts with the most ridiculous premise—some random high school kid gets teleported to a fantasy world and handed an axe to save a princess. But somehow, it totally works.

You'll spend most of your time hacking through monsters with that trusty axe, which actually gets stronger the more you use it. The first few levels feel manageable, but don't get too comfortable—by the time you hit those screen-filling bosses, you'll be sweating. The comic book-style cutscenes are a nice touch, even if the dialogue is hilariously over-the-top.

It's not as polished as Castlevania, but there's something oddly satisfying about the chunky pixel art and straightforward monster-bashing. Just be ready for that classic NES difficulty spike. I may or may not have thrown a controller back in '89.

If you like your retro games with a side of cheese and a solid challenge, this one's still a blast.
