Game Overview

Atlantis came out for the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1982, published by Imagic. It was part of that early wave of NES games, simple in concept but built around a clear, singular challenge. You don't see many games like it now, where the entire premise is just holding a defensive line against an endless assault.

You control a coastal defense cannon at the bottom of the screen, moving it left and right to fire lasers at an alien fleet. Your only goal is to protect the city of Atlantis for as long as possible; the game just gets faster and more overwhelming until you finally fail. The signature mechanics are the relentless, patterned enemy formations and the way destroyed enemies sometimes break apart into smaller, faster ships you also have to shoot. It's a pure test of reflexes and pattern recognition, a constant scramble to cover every angle of the attack. Playing it feels like trying to plug a dozen leaks in a dam with only your fingers.
