Awesome Possum is that kind of weird, lovable Genesis game that makes you go, "Yep, this is definitely from the '90s." You're a sunglasses-wearing possum with more attitude than a middle schooler who just discovered punk rock, and your job is to wreck pollution-spewing robots while collecting recycling bins—because saving the planet is apparently a side gig for rad marsupials.
The gameplay feels like someone took Sonic, dialed down the speed a notch, and replaced rings with soda cans. You’ll spin attack through factories, bounce off tires, and occasionally stop to read the possum’s terrible eco-puns (seriously, they’re so bad they loop back to charming). The music’s got that crunchy Genesis synth sound, and the levels are bright enough to give your retinas a workout.
It’s not the tightest platformer ever, but there’s something endearing about how hard it commits to being a goofy, green-themed adventure. If you’ve got a soft spot for janky retro mascots, this one’s worth a spin—just maybe don’t expect it to dethrone Sonic.
