Awesome Possum came out for the Sega Genesis in 1993, developed and published by Tengen. It was part of that wave of early 90s platformers trying to ride the coattails of bigger mascots, with a heavy, slightly awkward emphasis on environmental themes. The game never really stood out from the crowd, but it had a certain bizarre charm that made it memorable in its own strange way.
You control a wisecracking possum who runs, jumps, and spins through linear levels to defeat the evil Dr. Machino. Your main goal is to smash his robot minions and collect recyclable items, like soda cans, to restore the polluted environment. The gameplay involves a lot of bouncing off tires and car hoods to reach higher platforms, and you use a spin attack to break open containers and defeat enemies. The pacing is fast but often feels clunky, with some frustrating enemy placement and slippery controls. It feels like a chaotic, slightly broken Saturday morning cartoon that never quite found its footing.
