Backyard Sports Basketball 2007 on the GBA is basically what would happen if your neighborhood pickup game got turned into a video game—complete with kids who somehow have more swagger than actual NBA players. Pablo Sanchez is still the GOAT, obviously, but half the fun is figuring out which weird little kid fits your playstyle (Amir’s alley-oops are ridiculous).
The gameplay’s fast and arcade-y—no complicated controls, just quick passes, silly dunks, and the occasional power-up that makes someone shoot like they’ve got a jetpack. The graphics are bright and chunky in that perfect early-2000s handheld way, and the commentary’s full of cheesy one-liners that’ll either make you laugh or groan. It’s not deep, but it’s the kind of game you pick up for 15 minutes and suddenly realize you’ve been playing for an hour.
If you remember the Backyard Sports series, this one’s a solid dose of nostalgia. If you don’t? It’s still a surprisingly fun basketball game that doesn’t take itself seriously. Just don’t blame me when you start trash-talking your GBA.
