Game Overview

Bahamut Lagoon is one of those SNES gems that flew under the radar outside Japan. At first glance, it looks like a standard grid-based tactics game—you move your squad across tiled battlefields, positioning knights and mages just right. But then the dragon system kicks in, and suddenly you're feeding your pet wyrms stolen enemy weapons to make them evolve. Weird? Yeah. Awesome? Absolutely.

The battles flip between overhead strategy and first-person RPG combat when units clash, which keeps things from feeling too repetitive. And the story? Classic 90s Squaresoft—floating continents, amnesiac heroes, and way more political backstabbing than you'd expect from a game where you can name your dragons after your friends. Just don't get too attached to that starter fire drake; the late-game mutations get wild.

It's a shame this never got an official English release, but the fan translation holds up surprisingly well. You can tell the devs were having fun with this one—where else can you deploy a dragon that breathes literal rainbows?
